Media fragmentation is accelerating. Mass media is losing its mass. The Grammy Awards and Winter Olympics were once regarded by advertisers as vast oceans of interested viewers. This year America yawned and ignored these events completely; too much to do, too little time.

To advertise effectively today, you must abandon the old-school idea of "reaching the masses." The famous ad man Morris Hite, who was known for his good-ol'-boy approach to advertising, said it best when he quipped, "There is no such thing as national advertising. All advertising is local and personal. It's one man or woman reading one newspaper in the kitchen or watching TV in the den."

The key to effective advertising today is to focus on the individual.

Here are some low-cost ways to do it:

Door-hangers on doorknobs. If your target is geographically defined, such as a day care or grocery store, print a specific offer on door-hangers and place them on doorknobs in your area. This method will produce results in direct proportion to the strength of your offer. For example: "Professional day care for your little ones" is less likely to trigger people's interest in your day care than "Put your little ones in the care of someone you trust. Our professional day care services are available Monday through Friday." "Big enough to serve you, small enough to know you," is less likely to create new shoppers than "Let us wash your car for free while you shop. 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday at Super Foods."

Flyers under windshield wipers. If you need to reach the drivers of pickup trucks, what better way than to send your doorknob-hanging team into parking lots with flyers to put under windshield wipers? Yes, they may get run out of the mall parking lot by that security guard in the golf cart, and don't be surprised if some lonely soul with nothing better to do calls you to complain, but the results are definitely worth it.

Purchased word-of-mouth. Hire someone to be a walking ad and ride up and down in the elevators of tall buildings, stand at bus stops, wait at train stations, hang around in coffee shops and strike up conversations with strangers. "Have you tried that new deli over on 4th street? It's awesome." Sounds nuts, I know, but it works.

Virtual showroom. Build a website to serve as a virtual showroom. It's one of the best advertisements there is. Use it when people call to ask details about your company, your products or your services. "Are you sitting in front of a computer? Good." Most people will be, or can easily walk across the room to one. "Now go to Blahblah.com. Yeah, that's me, there on the right. Now click the button that says 'Equipment.' See that second photo?..." Think of this website as a place where you sit down to talk with interested prospects. Make sure the virtual showroom is equipped with all the same tools and props as your physical showroom. You'll be shocked what it does for the conversion rate of inquiries

. Nighttime silhouettes. You've probably never seen one, but that's all the more reason you should do it. Nobody else in your town has seen one either. First, locate a windowless wall at least three stories tall in a part of town that has lots of traffic at night, especially foot traffic. Then arrange with the owner of that building--and the building across the street--to let you install a logo projector. They're unbelievably effective. And in the long run, cheap. In some situations you can even use an old slide projector to achieve the desired effect.

T-shirts and vests. My rather successful little ad firm, with its 41 offices worldwide, was launched in 1980 with a t-shirt advertising a telephone thought-for-the-day on an answering machine. "Take a Break in Your Day. Dial Daybreak. 258-7700." I could only afford one such printed t-shirt. I wore it a lot.

Hand stamps. Someone I know recently attended a ticketed event that required a hand-stamp for readmission. The hand-stamp was a delightful little mini-ad for one of the sponsors. Can you imagine a better advertising vehicle for creating personal identification with a brand? There's something about looking down at your own hand and seeing a brand image that's part of you for the evening and knowing that the image has value. You're having fun, the brand is there, and it's part of you. The ink might wash off, but the impression it makes on the mind doesn't fade so quickly.

Publicity stunt. Nothing is quite so powerful as a publicity stunt that seizes the public's attention. But be careful; nothing is quite so pathetic as a thinly disguised grab at free advertising. Going for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records requires a lot of work, but holding a world record has tremendous value. One fellow recently dropped a golf ball at the edge of Mongolia, then whacked it 1,234 miles all the way to the other side. The journey required 12,170 swings of the club, 90 days and 510 lost balls. He was interviewed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, CNN, CNN International, CTV, ESPN Cold Pizza, and PGA Tour Sunday . Articles were published about him in The New York Times, the Times of London, and the AP issued a worldwide story about the exploit. Outside Magazine featured him as one of the 25 Coolest People Now, the Men's Journal put him in their Hall of Fame, National Public Radio interviewed him, and several European radio networks jumped on the bandwagon. Not a bad ROI on a 90-day investment, wouldn't you agree?

Self-publish a book. Nothing screams "expert" quite so loudly as a book written about a subject. You simply can't imagine the power of your name on the cover of a book. It's an advertisement for your company that'll last forever. So write a book that proves you're an expert, get an ISBN number, register it with the Library of Congress, pay a printer to print your book, then sell it on Amazon.com. You might only sell a few copies online, but the copies you give away in your town will make you a fortune. You won't make money on the book. You'll make it because of the book.

Spray-painted signs. In the early 1970s "Hamp Baker says Drive with Care" was spray-painted on car hoods salvaged from crumpled automobiles, then those hoods were tied with bailing wire to barbed-wire fences along roadsides here and there. Nobody in Oklahoma knew who Hamp Baker was, but his name was soon a household word. When he later ran for public office, he won by a landslide.

You may have noticed that each of the items on this list requires a certain amount of creative energy. Using Door Hangers to Promote Your Lawn Care Service Business: "We have tried just about every way you can imagine to sell our lawn care services. One of the best, and not too expensive, was to use door hangers. Not just any old door hangers but full color, nice looking door hangers with a place to leave a price quote for our services.

Even if a competing lawn care business does use door hangers they are most likely blah and not too interesting.

After I thought about this for a while, I decided to make some advertising materials based on the idea of “more free time” for our customers. They may be paying us for short grass or a neat lawn but the bottom line for most of our customers want to spend their time doing something other than lawn care.

Based on this idea I ended up making two pictures we can use for door hangers for our lawn care business.

The first was a picture of me pushing a mower carrying golf clubs. The second was a picture of me carrying a fishing pole and tackle box pushing a mower.

Once I had them looking the way we wanted I uploaded these to our online color printer. I had 500 full color door hangers made (250 of each) with a simple ad on the back with a place for me to leave a quote for the price of our services.

How’d this work out? Better than expected. I can pretty much tell if I put out 100 door hangers in a good area I will get anywhere from 3 to as many as 20 calls.

I think there are two reasons these work. One is door hangers have to be taken off the door to see what they are. If they are full color and glossy they will get looked at.

The second reason is you just don’t get that many door hangers. (From a lawn care business or any other business for that matter) Think about it. You get flyers, direct mail, etc all the time.

BUT…I can count on one had the number of time I’ve had a door hanger waiting on me when I got home.

Their success and growth fuel the ability of the town to provide resources such as police, fire, parks and recreation programs. They contribute a huge portion of the revenue generated to build the infrastructure needed such as roads, wastewater and water plants and schools. The issue of allowing or not allowing door hangers is much bigger than just advertising for some and junk mail to others.

There are several fundamental rights and values that are in jeopardy that need to be addressed: respect, First Amendment rights, trespassing and the importance of business to our community.

First, we should all respect each others' properties and those who deliver door hangers should use the driveway and sidewalk to do so; they should also take heed of any 'no trespassing/no solicitation' signs. However, we don't need to go to the extreme of a ban that will take our valuable police officers off the street to track down some door hanger for walking across someone's lawn.

With Gilbert's explosive growth, resources are precious and we need to prioritize them to accommodate all the new areas of development, including safety of our citizens. Creating a new ordinance sounds like a great idea. But once you take the time to start whittling it down to the unintended consequences that arise from more regulation, it is generally not so attractive anymore.

Let's talk about First Amendment rights. The town is not legally able to dictate what is printed on door hangers so it becomes next to impossible to regulate advertising vs. other types of uses for door hangers.

Defining trespassing and what the town can enforce becomes a task in itself. Does this apply to political campaigners, schoolkids raising funds, HOA newsletters, delivery of phone books, etc.?

Though a common perception is that face-to-face contact with potential voters is the most successful “get out the vote” tactic, door hangers were revealed to be a similarly cost-effective method to increase voter turnout in research focusing on the 2002 Michigan gubernatorial election. Though face-to-face contact does appear to boost turnout more than receiving a door hanger, it requires far less time to distribute a door hanger than to make a contact in person. Volunteer phone calls, according to the study, are slightly more cost-effective overall in moving voters to the polls.

“That door hangers are found to be an effective means of boosting turnout is a useful result,” says David King. “In a close election, door hangers are competitive with more personal tactics and can quickly blanket entire neighborhoods. Don't Speak Up Edelman Subscribers...
Richard Edelman's blog was received positively by the blogosphere when it debuted late last month -- and rightfully so, having someone of Edelman's stature and influence in the industry is important validation for the PR blogosphere. But I just can't, in good faith, bring myself to subscribe to his stuff. Shortly after word got out about Edelman's blog, I like so many other PR bloggers commented on his first post. My comment was pretty straight forward. I offered up the obligatory 'congrats' and respectfully asked if Edelman would be using his blog as a listening mechanism or if it was simply a marketing mouthpiece -- I never got an answer and more important, my comment never made the light of day.
I think it's pretty lame of Edelman and/or the folks behind the curtain to scratch my comment like that, but I guess they had their reasons. What bugs me most is that I consider blogging a conversation, and that by definition requires both talking and listening. If you're not going to listen, that's fine, but then do us all a favor and don't call your aggrandized CEO newsletter a blog.
In his first post, Edelman writes 'I want feedback, blunt and quick.' Well, now you have some. I tried to speak up, I'd like to think that Edelman will at some point in the future listen up...

That�s a good question, and from all the different rates you�ll get from all the different delivery companies out there, you�d think it was one of the great mystery's of our time.

We operate on the same ratio of mail carriers as the Post Office. We allocate 1 carrier for every 1,000 address� to be delivered. The Post Office pays their carriers $17.00 per hour to start. We pay $7.00 per hour. To deliver 10,000 pieces of mail, the Post Office charges $2,300 (3rd. Class Postcard Rate) and uses 10 carriers at $17.00 per hour for 8 hours. We charge $1,500 (weight up to 1 ounce) to deliver the same 10,000 pieces using our $7.00 per hour carriers. Over an 8 hour day, that adds up to an $800.00 labor savings, which we pass directly to you.

Can it be done with less carriers? Well...NO! Think about it, to deliver 1,000 address� per day, a carrier needs to average 2 address� EACH MINUTE! For 8 hours.

There are other inherent costs involved in door to door delivery. You need a van driver/crew chief to bring the carriers to the area and reload them with paper along their route. A second level of supervision is need to assure quality control. Our supervisors are attentive to the residents living in the delivery area and make a special effort to be responsive to concerns that arise from any delivery.

Some door to door companies try to save money by using 1 van/crew chief per route of 10,000 we find that to be a logistical nightmare. Think about 1 van trying to locate and control 10 carriers over a 5 square mile area & you can get an idea of the difficulties involved. We break down all our deliveries into routes of 5,000 which assures a more �eyes on� ap"
